Honorable Mention
Autumn Horses
Seaandbell (Debi Carwell)

dejected in withered pasture
trapped in rectangles of frail light
they stare sadly, munching their brittle granola

curved back, shivering flank, their souls
galloped away with the last sweet grass,
unimpressed with fiery trees
or autumn’s smoky perfume

Second Tree:

bathed in the light of a sudden, blazing elm,
(a Time Square of an elm), heart-stoppingly lit
with a million stories, a mélange of

rustling summer tales
passionately spoken in tongues of flame, each
shouting about a day of glory, their
hour of rain, then

exhausted, spent,
spiral away slowly
to join a mound of storytellers

settling softly in the crisp pages
of the old book below

Third View:

moving into shallow trees,
the last few vestiges of wild clothing cling,
a few neon leaves, summer stripping
her long, sultry nights

the mountains, in shaggy brown coats
roar their defiance.
winter coming
